Brisbane City Council Outdoor Gallery, Brisbane

A public art exhibition co-curated by Sarah Thomson and Alex Holt for Brisbane City Council’s Outdoor Gallery program.

Sunny Side Up was a collection of vibrant artworks by emerging Brisbane-based contemporary artists that explore Brisbane's subtropical identity, unique physical features, and cultural atmosphere. The exhibition brought to the fore the optimism, abundance, and playful spirit of the Sunshine State.

The exhibition took place across light boxes, vitrines and projections throughout Brisbane’s CBD over the summer of 2020-21. Sunny Side Up featured a series of public programs including fortnightly curator and artist-led walking tours, a photography workshop with Charlie Hillhouse in the Roma St Parklands, a plein air drawing class with Holly Anderson at Howard Smith Wharves, a panel discussion title ‘the Brisbane Feel’ at Town Square, Fish Lane, and a panel on Brisbane ARIs at Museum of Brisbane.

All of the artists were invited to extend upon their works with new Augmented Reality artworks produced in collaboration with Eye Jack. The AR artworks were visible over the physical artwork using the Eye Jack app and were activated further with a Treasure Hunt that encouraged viewers to visit all of the artwork sites to collect a prize: a limited edition artwork print.
