About Sarah Thomson

Sarah Thomson is currently the director of the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery in Queensland, Australia. She is interested in socially engaged projects, experimental exhibition formats and site-specific practices. Since moving to Hervey Bay from Brisbane, Sarah has focused on exploring the unique opportunities presented by developing and presenting contemporary art in a regional context, organising residencies to facilitate artistic exchange, programming relevant and engaging exhibitions and public programs, and platforming the gallery on a national stage.

Sarah has worked across curation, public programming and marketing roles at various contemporary art institutions. Prior to taking on the leadership of Hervey Bay Regional Gallery in November 2023, Sarah was the Public Programs and Community Engagement Officer at the gallery. Previously she worked at the Institute of Modern Art Brisbane as the Marketing Manager and Curatorial Assistant.

Sarah has project managed art prizes, including the churchie emerging art prize (2019 - 2022) at the IMA and Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize at HBRG. She has led curatorial projects including Making Art Work at the IMA, temporary and permanent public art commissions with Brisbane City Council and various gallery exhibitions in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

In October 2023, through Museums and Galleries Queensland’s Mentorship and Internship, program Sarah completed a two-week mentorship at The Unconformity Festival in Queenstown, Tasmania. In June 2024 Sarah completed a curatorial residency at Joya AiR in Almería, Spain.
