New Bloom

Tarlina Lane, Coorparoo
Commissioned by Brisbane City Council

New Bloom was commissioned by Brisbane City Council as part of the Village Precinct Projects, a public realm improvement program that aims to create vibrant neighbourhood centres across the city.

Artist Chantal Fraser was selected to produce a pavement surface treatment artwork for the converted Tarlina Lane shared zone, adjacent to Coorparoo State School. The commission included extensive community consultation and engagement including an artist-led workshop with Coopraroo State School students that informed Chantal’s design. The students were invited to create adornments made from recycled materials and trinkets resulting in a coterie of vibrant and textural masks, neckpieces, crowns, and accessories that allowed the students to express their creativity and uniqueness.

The visual and conceptual outcomes of the workshop informed the design of New Bloom. Drawing directly from photographs of the student’s sculptural adornments, Chantal experimented with collage and repetition to develop graphic floral forms. The final artwork New Bloom welcomes everyone who traverses Tarlina Lane with a vibrant, scattered botanic garland, forming an imaginative hybrid garden.

The artwork was officially launched with a laneway party in October 2022.
